Ok as it is, I have no “extra” time!  But, when this idea was passed on to me from my friend Jenn at Klean I new I had to make time!  I have only done this for two days and it has already been a stress reliever.  I find myself going to bed at night thinking of things I can do or give anonomously as it makes me feel so much better.

I think by the end of this whole 29 day ordeal I am going to sign up again! Or maybe I wont have to sign up, maybe by then I will just give freely and daily without even having to think about it…….

Ten things you can do this Earth Day

Wondering how you can make a difference?
Here are 10 things you can do to help the planet, whether it’s Earth Day or not.

1. Leave your car at home for a day (or a week or a month) and try walking or biking. If work is too far away to walk, take public transit or carpool. One city bus eliminates the emissions of 40 cars.

2. Turn off the lights, the computer and the television when they are not in use. Using only highly efficient and money-saving appliances can reduce the electricity consumption of an average household to one-10th of the national average.

3. Try eating meat-free at least one day a week. A meat-based diet requires seven times more land than a plant-based diet. Livestock production is responsible for more climate change gasses than all the motor vehicles in the world.

4. Choose foods produced organically, locally and in season. Support your regional farmers and farming industry: buying locally and in season is better for the environment than buying foods that have been shipped hundreds of kilometres to your local market.

5. Put a composter in your backyard or use your green bin to reduce household waste. Composting organics has two key benefits: it reduces the amount of waste going to landfills and when added to your garden, helps nourish soil and plants.

6. Turn off your car’s engine if stopped for more than 10 seconds. If every driver of a light-duty vehicle avoided idling by five minutes a day, collectively, we would save 1.8 million litres of fuel per day, almost 4500 tonnes of GHG emissions.

7. Set your thermostat above room temperature in the summer and below room temperature in the winter. For each degree you adjust, you can save 5% on your utility bill and 1% on your energy use.

8. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). A CFL uses only 25% as much energy as an incandescent bulb and lasts 10 times longer.

9. The simple act of recycling has more impact on the environment than the average Canadian thinks. The amount of wood and paper North Americans throw away each year is enough to heat five million homes for 200 years.

10. This is a great opportunity to brag. Tell someone what you’re doing to make the world a better place. Support the cause. Encourage them to get involved too.

Photobucket

This photo of the plug was taken at the scene of a house fire that occurred over the weekend.

I’ve never heard this info before…

This was received from a friend who is in the insurance property business. It is well worth reading.

This is one of those e-mails that if you don’t send it, rest assured someone on your list will suffer for not reading it. The original message was written by a lady whose brother and wife learned a hard  lesson this past week.

Their house burnt down.. nothing left but ashes. They have good insurance so the house will be replaced and most of the contents. That is the good news.

However, they were sick when they found out the cause of the fire. The insurance investigator sifted through the ashes for several hours. He had the cause of the fire traced to the master bathroom. He asked her sister-in-law what she had plugged in
the bathroom. She listed the normal things….curling iron, blow dryer.

He kept saying to her, ‘No, this would be something that would disintegrate at high temperatures’. Then her sister-in-law remembered she had a Glade Plug-In, in the bathroom.

The investigator had one of those ‘Aha’ moments. He said that was the cause of the fire. He said he has seen more house fires started with the plug-in type room fresheners than anything else. He said the plastic they are made from is THIN. He also said that in every case there was nothing left to prove that it even existed. When the investigator looked in the wall plug, the two prongs left from the plug-in were still in there.

Her sister-in-law had one of the plug-ins that had a small night light built in it. She said she had noticed that the light would dim and then finally go out. She would walk in to the bathroom a few hours later, and the light would be back on again. The investigator said that the unit was getting too hot, and would dim and go out rather than just blow the light bulb. Once it cooled down it would come back on. That is a warning sign.

The investigator said he personally wouldn’t have any type of plug in fragrance device anywhere in his house. He has seen too many places that have been burned down due to them.

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW THAT USES THESE!

IT NOT ONLY COULD IT SAVE SOMEONE’S HOUSE, BUT IT COULD SAVE SOMEONE’S LIFE

When the alarm rings, she slowly gets out of bed, turns on the shower and under the steady stream of warm water, she gently scrubs her body with a deodorant soap. Next, she shampoos her tinted hair. Rinsing the shampoo, she applies a good amount of hair conditioner and lets it penetrate while she pops the top on the shaving cream and shaves her legs. The shower finished, she towel dries, sprays the scented antiperspirant on, brushes her teeth, then rinses and gargles with mouthwash. She combs setting gel through her hair then blows it dry and spritzes with hairspray. She rubs in an even coat of body lotion and a dusting of powder over her skin. Sitting at her vanity, she carefully applies a thin film of moisturizer over her face to reduce the fine lines. Today she will wear foundation and a little blush - and better add some eye shadow for todays special meeting and a little eye liner and a stroke of mascara. A dab of lipstick, a poof of perfume and a little sunscreen on her arms and she is set for the day. She looks radiant and healthy but her looks are killing her.

WHAT HAVE THESE PRODUCTS EXPOSED HER TO IN A MATTER OF MINUTES? Continue reading »

With the advent of mosquito season, many people are feeling concern for more than just the annoying itchiness of a bite or two. Worries about West Nile Virus — and other mosquito-carried diseases — are leading many who would normally avoid excessive use of chemicals, to start spraying and slathering on insect repellents containing the chemical, DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide). But are there valid, healthier options when it comes to repelling our fine buzzing and biting friends? You bet! Continue reading »
